Opt Out Domains and Emails

Post by m011404 »

Hi, I am new to EFA and just want to say that you have a fantastic bit of kit here that I will definitely recommend to anyone who will listen!    :D :D

I have a clarification I would like to request about opt-out domains and opt-out emails...I didn't see any detailed mention of their function. The web interface says that a domain/email that is on the opt-out list are (recipients for whom messages are never greylisted...am I correct in my understanding that if my email is email@example.com and I put example.com or email@example.com in the appropriate opt-out list that anyone who tries to email my domain/email address will never be greylisted?

Thanks for the clarification. Keep up the great work!

You are somewhat correct :-)

If you put email@example.com on the opt-out list then mail send FROM that address will never be greylisted.

So it is not the receiving part you enter but the sending mail.

Hi Darky, thanks for your response...would you mind clarifying one more thing for me...based on your answer, how is the opt-out domains/emails different from whitelisting a domain/email?

Is it that if I whitelist a domain/email, no email that is ever received from that domain/email will ever be flagged as spam?

If I add a domain/email to the appropriate opt-out list, does that mean that the domain/email will never be greylisted, but their email still could be filtered out as spam?

Thanks so much for your insight and again kudos on the outstanding work that you do...expect a donation from me as a show of my support!

Optout/optin is only for the greylisting option.
White/blacklisting is for spam checking.

A mail is send to one of your domain's, then first the greylisting kicks in, what greylisting does is blocking the SENDER for a few minutes.
A normal and good configured mail server will retry the transmission after a few minutes, where spammers who use Viruses/maleware don't do this, thus you receive less spam but there can be a delay in the receiving of mail.

If the SENDERS mail address or IP is on the optout domain or email list they are never blocked in this first attempt (so no delay in mail receiving).
(note that the system automatically adds hosts/mailaddresses to the optout lists if they pass the second attempt.)

When the mail is received by E.F.A. after this then the mail is checked against the white/blacklist (in E.F.A. web interface under LISTS).
If the mail address or domain is whitelisted the mail is always marked as OK and not checked for spam content (and if on the blacklist it is always marked as SPAM)

As it are 2 seperate systems/lists it can be a bit confusing but thats just the way it works :-)
