So someone keeps trying to log into my box constantly from the same IP for a while. Is there an auto-ban option for this or is it possible to get an email when a new IP comes up so that I can block it at my firewall?

Consider implementing Denyhosts or fail2ban

I've used denyhosts for many years, but developement stopped at one point. It looks like someone is continuing the work again so fingers crossed.
