The future of eFa (poll)

Post by shawniverson » 28 Jun 2020 16:55

Hello folks! :D

In my opinion, eFa is okay and can do the job but as you may be aware, it is based on some pretty old (but tried and true) software. I believe it could be better, and I am starting to get to a point where I can focus on it again.

So, my question for everyone is, where should I and others focus our efforts? This will help me in knowing how radical or cautious I should be moving forward.

Here's a poll to act as a sort of spectrum

Thanks in advance for your feedback

All the rage these days is reskinning a perfectly usable UI for something "sexy".

Please don't do that. Focus on adding whatever changes make using EFA better.

Yes, being able to use the UI on a mobile device is nice, but if I need to manage the system, I'll get to a computer with a web browser, large screen and ssh.

Oh come on where is everybody's sense of adventure!

So, thanks to everyone for your responses. The message I am receiving is to maintain compatibility, split 50/50 between options 1 and 2 at the moment.

Therefore, the eFa roadmap would be as follows based on feedback:

1) Maintain compatibility
2) Component changes must be backward compatible, either...
a) As an option you can toggle between
b) As a fully compatible alternative
3) Focus on functionality

Things that probably fit the roadmap
Postscreen support
Ongoing software updates
Latest distro support (i.e CentOS 8)
Engine enhancements (MTA level scanning)
RFC compliant enhancements (i.e. OpenARC)
Any other ideas the community has :)

Things that probably don't fit the roadmap
Engine replacement
GUI replacement
MTA replacement
Major distro changes
Version eFa 4.0.2 now available!

Sounds good. Although you may want to move the Centos 8 compatibility up a bit so you'll have a few more years to work on the other things.

[edit: new -> few. doh!]

I'd say the User (not admin) part of the GUI is the biggest issue I have. Too much confusion, doesn't look like a normal website (by todays standards).

For admin, you could remove the GUI and just do everything on the shell for all I care. Just stop the bitching from users.

Can you be a bit more specific? What gripes do your users have about the UI? What do they find confusing about it?

Or are they just unhappy with the way it looks because it doesn't use a modern "clean" and "responsive" design?

The greylisting could be more comfortable to manage, i.e. selecting entries by wildcards.

A live view of the (watch or tail), of the maillog would be nice to have.

I would also prefer remain stable over UI refresh.
