Message size exceeds size limit 10485760

Post by maik »

I've been beating my head against this for the past day or so. Any incoming emails over 10M in size get rejected with a bounce message, reportedly from Postfix, stating the size exceeds that 10MB limit. I have no idea what setting is affecting this and it's really frustrating. Postfix appears to be set to 512000000, though that clearly isn't the case, and the Mailscanner configuration (under the rules folder) lists 0 as the default (which it says is unlimited) for FromOrTo. I explicitly set 50MB and it doesn't appear to make any difference. What am I missing?

by default messages less than 50Mb should be accepted.
Just tested this on multiple EFA 0.3 machines to be sure but all just accept.
Could you maybe post the exact bounce message & the logging section of /var/log/mail.log?

See below, this is on a default efa0.3 installation when sending a 20MB message from gmail:

It won't do spam checking because the mail is to big but it accepts the mail for delivery.

Weird thing, by default this should be set to 50MB

What does the following say when you run it?

Code: Select all

postconf -n | grep message_size_limit
and when you search for 10485760 in /etc/ does that show any hits?

Code: Select all

cd /etc
grep -R 10485760 *

Code: Select all

root@efa:~# postconf -n | grep message_size_limit
message_size_limit = 512000000

Code: Select all

root@efa:~# cd /etc/
root@efa:/etc# grep -R 10485760 *
root@efa:/etc#
I had both of these thoughts and have even grepped through the entire filesystem for 10485760 and found nothing. I also thought maybe 10M would be present somewhere but didn't find anything relevant. So weird.

Weird indeed, if postfix says that the size limit is 512000000 but in the logs you show it says that it exceeds the size limit of 10MB then something inside postfix seems to be wrong.. :S

Maybe a silly question but did you try a reboot ?

Yep. Felt a little crazy doing it, but it didn't make a difference. I feel like there's some obvious answer here. Could it be Exchange kicking it back to Postfix and then postfix generating that message? That seems pretty off the wall but I'm just grasping at straws right now.

In my setup in /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf there are several size options, like Maximum Message Size = %rules-dir%/max.message.size.rules or ClamAVmodule Maximum File Size = 10000000 # (10 Mbytes).
Maybe one of those are teasing you?

So the last post at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... it-829722/ set me straight. The bounce log message is coming from postfix/smtp which is the smtp client which sends the outgoing message. In the log it says it's coming from mail. which is the downstream Exchange server. That's the problem right there (as if it were any surprise!).
