I would say FreeBSD or Debian, CentOS and Ubuntu are not really linux community, they refuse to contribute back to the linux community. (especially Canonical), CentOS does it a little bit but way to less still.

Note that the current CentOS version (CentOS-6) is still supported until November 30, 2020, so we have some time
How much time left to vote? Are we waiting for the right result?

I wished we had a more clearer result :)

Just a single vote less for debian.

Keeping that in mind I am leaning more against CentOS 7 (altough I love debian based myself more..)
I think it is best to stay with CentOS and build further on the base we already have.

Wouldn't it be the best if the scripter and maintainer who work the most with the underlying OS select an OS which they know like the back of one's hand?

An OS which is widespread and which has a good open-source (!) community?

Maybe someone should make a survey "Do you use EFA if it’s based on [OS]?" I bet no matter which OS is [OS], the average user wants a good GUI and a stable system.

I don't care if the system is based on CentOS or Debian, I 'like' debian more but linux = linux.

My main concern is stability, support and user acceptance.

Why am I more leaning against CentOS.. wel mainly because the livecycle support is longer and CentOS/RedHat is as far as I can tell used by more company's than Debian based.

Thats why we have the poll :), we have to do something for the next big upgrade anyway, with CentOS 7 an easy inplace upgrade is not really possible so we have to write some export -> import (migrate) tool for users to move to the new version.

If there is a bigger audience who would like to use Debian based then it is an easy choice, if not I guess i'm going to stick with CentOS.

Hai,

Im a big debian fan, if you guys dont mind, i'll fork on github and im going to start to create an installer for Debian systems.
Is there any existing code which i can use maybe?

I have some good ideas also to even improve EFA more.
Im not the best coder, but i'll do my best.

I will only do an installer script, no VM images, this is because in the end i'll must be able to install without iso.

What about continuing with Centos 6? After all, it will be supported for another couple of years.

That is the idea, try to maintain CentOS 6 but some features might become available only for an newer system which runs in beta until we migrate over completely (we already notice some issues with packages like unrar and centos 6..)

I'm thinking keeping EFA supported with CentOS 6.x and work on CentOS 7 for new features and support.

So I guess the best methode is:
EFA 3.x.x.x = Centos 6
EFA 4.x.x.x = Centos 7

We have until november 2020 with CentOS 6 so time enough to work on EFA 4 which is renewed :)
(or use Debian, but the poll is clear that people like CentOS more..)

The 'problem' with CentOS 7 is also Systemd, not everything is supporting Systemd just yet so it takes some work and development.
As most know EFA is just an collection of existing tools, which means that all support should first be 'ported' in the original source before we can use it in EFA, this takes some time.

My personal goal is good IPV6 support but it still requires some work for mailwatch, dcc, pyzor, razor, sqlgrey etc..
The same will probably be the case for good systemd support.

By the way:
Although i'm pretty busy at the moment and have not spend much time on EFA the past months, Shawn has been an big help with the project so kudo's for Shawn

Just curious on the timeframe for V4. IPv6 is starting to get more and more requested.

No Archlinux or Manajro Net Edition ?...that would be an open alternative. Just my 2 cents :)

I recently came across Devuan, a Debian fork with systemd excised.

I'm cautiously and optimistically, keeping an eye on it to see where it goes.

I am a Debian guy.... I actually prefer Debian even to Ubuntu unless I'm working with something that deals a lot with media (solely because of repositories) but, in this case, I like the idea of going with LTS.... but honestly, I'd be for either Debian or Ubuntu.... I honestly almost passed right over EFA simply because it was CentOS based :shhh:

Hi
i just voted for CentOS 7 . Reason is my assumption that the "upgrade" from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 should be easier.
But , as usual there is always a but :-), I have used on my VMs quite heavily Ubuntu LTS. And here the do-upgrade scripts work quite good.
So looking into the feature it might be easier to have one time a change and later have less issues.
Especially looking into the support policy (Dirty Cow) of the different companies i see that some react fast and from other you just dont get anything. And if you depend on such a company you are probably hit sooner or later. As CentOS relies on RedHat we are urrently depending on Redhat. Do we want this ?

The upgrade to another distribution might even be "just" an export of the config data and then import on the new system.

Just my 5 Cent.

Yours
tesme33

P.S.: I also dont like Systemd. You always need a tool to to something. With the good working init shell scripts you could use: ex.vi,awk,sed,... to edit or even do offline edit on any other system.

I'm currently evaluating Devuan - Debian without the hated systemd

EPEL has a lot covered - but not all. I gave just tried to install on CentOS 7 with EPEL, and for sure some packages are missing. When it is perl modules, then can be installed using cpan - but for my test install I managed to rpm build most of the needed packages (it did not take that much time, sometimes it is possible to adopt a .spec file from e.g. Suse).

I more or less have the OS install and configuration covered - now I just need to modify the supporting scripts (configuration, monitoring and so on). Hopefully I will be able to give some feedback during a couple of weeks on my progress...

Will it make sense to convert some of the tar.gz files to RPM packages (even though most of the contents simply is copied to the target location) ?

It will make it easier to update components simply by using the yum command....

Where I'm from (visiting and working with lots of different companies) you rarely see a CentOS machine. Running around I see (in order of most common to least common) mostly Ubuntu, Debian, _other_, and finally a CentOS machine on very rare occasion. I've never even seen CentOS 7 in the real world. Only on lab machines.

It's rigged.

At our company we have only Centos 7, except for eFa. The last system we need to "upgrade" is eFA. So I would like to start with eFa v4 to build it up on Centos 7. So I tried the build script as provided on GitHub. But the repo eFa v4 is empty (no access). Is there nothing available in the repo yet?

Also since the new forum software has been upgraded, the eFa v4 section in the forum has been gone.

My considerations were based on RHEL distros only, so I modified EFA Centos KickStart script to build EFA RHEL ISO.
With RHEL we are compliant with our large company security policy and i'm totally not accepting moving to Debian direction, IMHO Debian/Ubuntu distros are for personal usage only.

3x and 4x CentOS 6 and 7. I hope with version 4x we can also upgrade if we are still using Centos 6?

I also don't like systemd at all. It makes our life harder and more complicated without any gain.

However systemd is here to stay with linux, so systemd alone should not be an argument for choosing a Linux OS.

I've also voted for Centos due to it's longer support period and better support from RH.

Upgrade from 6 to 7 is also not a clean option. So export->import is the way to go.
