Webmin in EFA4

I am curious. Now that I have the beta up and running I do not see Webmin.

Is that on the roadmap, or something we add on ourselves?

Thanks,

Todd

I'm thinking of adding webmin in as an option you can turn on. Thoughts?

Good idea.

I understand not everyone may want or use Webmin, so no sense using the resources.

We use Webmin whenever working on EFA. It would take me much longer without File Manager and GUI for editing files copy/paste etc. Also for configuring LDAP, scripts, postfix, mailscanner and so on. We have a considerable amount of customization in our Postfix.

Even for viewing log files.

It makes the whole package much easier to manage without being an expert in Linux.

"adding webmin in as an option you can turn on" That's ok, but where do you draw the line?
I like the current minimal approach, as it's no issue to install additional packages. I always install mc, due the simple fact I'm used to it ( having a windows background) and I still feel a bit silly sitting next to someone who uses command-line only.

Sometimes you need to change. Just remember the first time you used the vi editor. When used to it, it's a blessing.

But, as always, that's my opinion ;)

I already did

Nothing will be installed unless you turn it on. This and some other things to come will not be "pre-loaded" like before :D

Agreed. I'm committed to this approach.

I also find webmin useful to keep track of things, but agree if not required for EFA to function it should be optional :)

I certainly dont mind learning new skills. I wish I knew Linux better after working with it for over 10 years. ;)

My challenge is the same as for most of us, we have a lot of ground to cover. Various Windows server technologies, different NIX distros and the hardware. I would love to know more about all of them. I shove stuff in my brain and most leaks out.

We have Webmin on all our Linux servers. Makes my work easier and reduces the learning curve.

btw I tried to install Webmin 1.90 on EFA4 and failed.

I'll add the webmin option tonight for the next round of testing.

Guys...

It has been a while since I used webmin, and the new interface ROCKS :D

Million $$$ question. Does this interface make the most sense for developing the admin portal for eFa as a webmin module? What is great is all the stuff you can already do with webmin,...and I don't have to reinvent the wheel

If I do, I will need to include webmin as a core component.

I was going to develop an admin portal from scratch using Symfony/Bootstrap/etc. but why?

Aww hell, you can even do let's encrypt with webmin now...I AM reinventing the wheel!!!

Is cockpit any better than webmin? I haven't used either much.

I have not used cockpit.

We have webmin accross our Linux boxes because it is a familiar easy to understand interface. That doesn't make it better than anything else...

Except CLI

Well, I want to use webmin, but...

This is a problem :(

Also, just a PSA for anyone planning to use Webmin.

Does it really matter if the admin site is sitting behind a firewall? I don't see why anyone in their right mind would open mailwatch/webadmin pages to the world

We do not expose Webmin publicly. It is used only inside the network for system management.

Maybe add a Warning when the package is installed?

I just came across this thread while trying to figure out why webadmin was not working on my new efa4 instance.

If you need to warn people not to expose webadmin to the internet... should those people even be administering the computers in question?

Probably not enabling webadmin by default is enough for the less experienced admins.

and holy crap! what an improvement in the webadmin interface!

So no definitive answer in the thread,...

1. Is Webmin going to be an option to be enabled or installed?

2. If not right now, in the future?

What's your particular question?

If it's "can we enable webadmin", then the answer is yes.

Enable it through the eFa Configuration Program, and then access it via https://<your-eFa-box>:10000/

If the question is: "can it be enabled by default", then suggest it as a feature request as it is not enabled by default for security reasons.

Is there anything else unanswered for you?
