Emails going through mail filter, but not showing in logs or web UI

Post by nexioglobal »

Hi,

We have deployed 2 Mail Filter servers, 1 as primary and another as backup, but since past few days we have noticed a strange behavior in both. The primary has stopped recording logs, and is not showing any new emails in web ui, but the emails are being delivered, at first we thought that they are coming from backup, but when we checked the header, it shows that they are coming from the primary mail filter server. However it is not showing up in any logs, but emails are being delivered.

Also the backup server is getting more mails than usual, previously it used to get only 2-3 per day, but now it gets much more than that and those are also being delivered.

The emails which are delivered by primary and backup are different so we know that both mail filters are working, but primary is not keeping any logs, and secondary is getting higher than usual quantity.

To add to this, both servers are configured to keep mail for 30 days in Quarantine, but none of them are keeping it for 30 days.

Primary Version: MailWatch for MailScanner v1.2.7-dev running on EFA-3.0.2.6
Backup Version: MailWatch for MailScanner v1.2.7-dev running on EFA-3.0.2.6

Any help on this is highly appreciated.

Thanks

First, check your firewall settings

Is the smtp traffic really being delivered to your efa boxes, or are they being delivered to your mail server directly?

Hi,

Checked with inactive firewall on server, but it didn't solve.

Also, checked using mxtoolbox, and it shows both primary and backup server are ok, and are responding properly. And logs and recent messages are only visible in backup server, external emails are being sent to EFA. Internal emails are delivered directly.

Some emails which are not shown in both primary and backup server, which are from external source and are delivered, come through primary server (checked in email header).

Thanks.

Hi,

We found the issue.

The server recently got shut down due to power outage, which somehow reset the date and clock on the server. NTP was running, but not syncing. Fixing the time and date also fixed the mail issue. Now its showing the new arrivals in recent messages and logs, and Quarantine is also showing 30 days of logs.

Thanks

You need to check your network firewall.

How does the email actually get into your network? Where is it supposed to go from there? Where does it actually go?

Are your EFA servers out of disk space?

Hi,

Yes, it was indeed weird, we were going through pages if we can get any clue at all, and someone caught the date in greylist page. Glad he did.

Thanks for your help and time :). Appreciate all the effort you guys put into the system.

Regards
